Winner winner chicken dinner!

The festive support to members of our Social Supermarket and Community Café continued at Hall Road this week.

We were delighted to welcome Zena, a fantastic local chef, who came in to demonstrate how to make a delicious chicken dinner. We'll be providing 168 local families with chickens and all the vegetables, for free, so they can enjoy a Christmas lunch at home without worrying about the cost.

Zena shared lot of tips as she boned and prepared the chicken, made the stuffing, gravy and then served up so our members could enjoy the amazing lunch. You can see lots of photos below.

This session was a Christmas special version of our Cook, Eat, Grow programme. This has been running since February. These free sessions are about members learning, and teaching each other, new cooking skills to produce healthy, varied meals with the food that we have in the Social Supermarket.

Zena's delicious chicken dinner

Let's get started!
Boning the chicken
Making the stuffing. We used sausagemeat from skinless sausages, apricots and walnuts
English mustard was rubbed onto the chickens before cooking, and we added sage leaves. They were resting on carrots and onions in the tray.

Making chicken stock for the gravy
The start of our gravy: chopped onions, flour added to thicken, then the chicken stock we made.

Perfect roast potatoes
Serving up the chicken and stuffing
