"It is very frightening to run out of money"
Our Social Supermarket opened last summer and is already helping around 2,000 households in Norwich deal with the cost of living crisis.
Our store provides fruit, vegetables, bread and sanitary products for free with other groceries at costs below other supermarkets.
This is how one person described what we do ...
"I just want to say thank you to you and all the staff at the Social Supermarket.
I became a member when you first opened. The discounted items have made it possible to get through the month and keep myself fed since I had a change of financial circumstances last year and have been struggling to recover from this.
I was in a very precarious situation last week following the Christmas expenses. I had run out of money. A staff member noticed that I had collected only free items alongside one 20p rice meal. She enquired about my circumstances and then went to organise a £20.00 voucher for me. This was all done with kindness and sensitivity. It was such a relief to have this and know that I can eat until payday. It is very frightening to run out of money.
I have a full time job as a healthcare professional. I inform patients of about the services you provide and support people to engage in your volunteer programmes. However, it takes just a few extra demands on my budget to make things hard to manage. The low cost products and emergency help you provide is a lifeline. Thank you."
Thank you to the many businesses who supply food to our store, the Household Support Fund looked after by Norfolk Community Foundation, our volunteers and the many who donated to our Winter Food Campaign.
